OptiLIGHT by Lumenis for Dry Eye Treatment

OptiLIGHT is the first FDA-approved dry eye treatment that uses Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) to address inflammation of the eyes – one of the major factors in dry eye disease called Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). MGD accounts for approximately 86% of cases of dry eye disease. Meibomian glands are responsible for creating the oil that covers our tears, allowing the tears to stay on our eyes between our blinks. When the meibomian glands become clogged, patients experience symptoms such as:

  • Redness
  • Scratchy eyes
  • Burning
  • Increased tearing
  • Eye fatigue
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Difficulty wearing contact lenses

OptiLIGHT is specifically developed to treat the eyes safely and gently, yet provide a long-lasting solution for dry eyes without the use of expensive eye drops and inconvenient warm compresses.

Who Is A Candidate for OptiLIGHT?
Those who suffer from the symptoms listed above are great candidates. Also, those with skin type I-IV are good candidates.

What Is OptiLIGHT Treatment Like?
A typical treatment session lasts approximately 15 minutes and each session is spaced 2-3 weeks apart. Four sessions are typically necessary. Maintenance sessions are encouraged every 6-12 months for long-lasting results. The procedure is safe and comfortable, targeting the glands beneath the skin under the eye. Occasionally patients experience a mild stinging sensation.

What Kind of Recovery Period Is Expected?
Recovery time is minimal, typically non-existent! Most patients have no issue going about their daily routine immediately after the treatment and will notice an improvement in their dry eye symptoms after the second or third session. Some patients experience a mild sunburn sensation. The following are post-treatment recommendations:

  • The first evening: Avoid rubbing the treatment area and use lukewarm water to clean the skin. Apply a soothing moisturizer or gel.l
  • Two days following: Avoid sun exposure and tanning.
  • One month following: Wear sunscreen on the treatment area daily.

What Results Should I Expect?
Typically, a decrease in irritation, redness, and inflammation is noticed. Elimination of abnormal blood vessels, removal of bacteria around the eyes, and increased tear break-up time (the time tears stay on the eye without evaporating) are all results that are achieved. Meibomian glands become unblocked and quality of vision is improved. Maintenance sessions every 6-12 months are necessary for long-lasting results.

Why Should I Consider OptiLIGHT Rather Than Conventional Treatments?
Artificial tears, warm compresses, and prescription eye drops are commonly first-line treatments for dry eyes. However, these options provide short-term relief, leading to continual use and potentially a high financial burden. OptiLIGHT provides a long-term solution that addresses the underlying problem that is creating the symptoms.
